Kim Kong-un, the president of North Korea, has forced people to turn in their pet dogs, so they can be slaughtered for food

The pet dogs are being sold for meat to zoos or restaurants as floods and Covid-19 has worsened the already dire economic situation in the region.

Authorities have identified households with pet dogs and have ordered them to hand over the dogs or confiscate them forcefully.

Statistics from North Korea are not made public, but South Koreans consumes 2 million dogs a year according to a 2018 Associated Press report.

Reportedly, the delicacy had become increasingly less popular.

That report also said dogs were raised on farms for the purpose of being eaten, slaughtered for human consumption in both nations.
